The Fourth Time Charm – Maya Hughes

56518257. sy475

“Are you sleeping with my daughter?”

Not a question I want to hear from my coach. The man holding my pro future in the palm of his hand.

The answer: No.

The real answer: I’d sure as hell like to be.

Marisa’s been my best friend since third grade. And now she needs my help—and a place to stay. Senior year was supposed to be the year to keep some distance until the season finished and my draft prospects were safe.

But resisting her is becoming impossible. Movie Thursdays under the blankets. Study sessions on my bed. Wild party nights where I kept any guy interested at bay with a single glare.

Her dad can bench my ass for the entire season, so she’s off limits—for now.

She’s the only woman I’ve ever loved. And one heated night, I can’t stop fighting every cell in my body and can’t stop myself from sampling her sexy smile, her sweet smell, and her sultry curves.

We’re walking a tightrope with my future on the line. Let’s just make sure Coach doesn’t find out…

So this is the fourth book in the Fulton U series it started with The Perfect First, The Second We Met, and The Third Best Thing and now this book. I had high expectations for this book being that we’ve been dangled this relationship all the way through the other books and it didn’t disappoint.

LJ and Marisa’s friendship is special, I love the bond they have with each other but obviously they both have feelings for each other that they think are unrequited and honestly the dance that these two do around their feelings. It made me laugh the fact they both wouldn’t admit to having their feelings in case it ruined the friendship when in fact not telling each other is usually what can ruin these things.

LJ is really cute and protective, I love how much of a family man he is. I also love that he takes everything on his shoulders but that can also be a really bad thing as he takes too much on sometimes.

Marisa has had it rough, not really knowing a positive or good family she feels like she has nobody other than LJ and she doesn’t want to ruin that. I felt really bad for her when it’s revealed her mum was an alcoholic and her dad left when she was a little. She’s had it rough.

I love that Marisa not cooking is so heavy in this book and we realise how much of a bad cook she actually is. But it’s still funny especially LJ trying to not hurt her feelings I just love it. So precious.

For the majority of this book it was a 4 star read and then something happened that spun this book around and made it a 5 star book. We have Marisa’s dad who is also the coach trying to repair his relationship with her. Which doesn’t happen until the end of the book when they reach a more mutual understanding and honestly when it happens in the book if you’ve read it you know what I mean. I cried. I sobbed my heart out when I was reading the emails. That is what turned this book from a 4 to a 5 for me.

I really loved LJ and Marisa’s relationship and they were perfect for each other I loved their story so much and I’m kind of sad Fulton U is over for now but I feel like Keyton really deserves book.

The Third Best Thing – Maya Hughes

Dear Letter Girl, I need to see you. When can we meet?

Her response never came. My secret pen pal with a dirty mind has ghosted me. I’ve roped Jules, my sweet as pie next door neighbor, to help me track her down.

There’s only one problem–I’m falling for her. The tortoise shell glasses, out of this world curves and delicious treats are making the search for The Letter Girl even harder.

My notes were supposed to be a one time thing.

A little too much wine and naughty thoughts on a winter’s night. I never thought Berk would write back. I wanted to tell him it was me, but the fear of rejection kept my lips sealed.

Now he’s enlisted my help to track down The Letter Girl and our search has him hot on my, ahem, her trail.

She’s the girl next door.

He’s my secret pen pal.

Truth is on a collision course with their hearts and it’s only a matter of time before one of them gets wrecked…

So this is the third book in the Fulton U series I read The Perfect First and The Second We Met and honestly this book was highly anticipated. I knew this was going to be the book that destroyed me, I was right. It did destroy me. It broke my heart and mended it back together but I also was not prepared for that. I thought I was but I wasn’t, this is the first book in the series that made me cry also the first book of the year to make me cry although being that this is the 3rd book I’m sure there will be many more.

I had anticipated Jules and Berk’s story from the very first book the groundwork was laid so well for The Letter girl who is Jules. I really like Jules she was so self-conscious of herself which I’m not surprised once you see how her mother behaviours towards her but I hate how much she hates herself but on another thing I think anyone can relate to her in terms of not liking how you look and about learning to love yourself.

Berk he is obsessed with finding out who letter girl is but he also begins to fall for Jules the more time he spends with her and lets letter girl goes. I love how cute and sensitive Berk he is, he’s also fiercely loyal.

Alexis first make an appearance in the very first book but we don’t realise how important she is until she’s in this book where it is revealed that she is Berk’s sister and he does nothing but save her all the time. She is a sore subject for all of his friends and he is fiercely protective of her. She causes some issues in this book between Berk and Jules which I won’t say anymore because spoilers.

I really love how their relationship developed also the near kiss between Berk and Jules in the greenhouse it was the perfect scene but it didn’t happen but honestly the romantic scene was set so perfectly. When their first kiss did finally happen I felt literal got chills, also the sex scenes in this book were hot. Like oh my god they were so sexy and have to admit if I had a boyfriend I would have had a pause in the book. I liked their relationship and the sexual tension between them was just high.

I love that she begins baking and it gets her confidence up, I also love that Berk builds her up at any opportunity as does everyone else around her and she begins to learn to love herself with help. I think that’s my one thing with this book not only do we have the relationship with Berk and Jules the stuff with Alexa and the family thing we also learning to love yourself and it’s the most important thing you could take for yourself to love yourself.

This whole book hit me in the feels I love that Jules repeated Berk’s speech to him about toxic people and decided to remove herself so she wasn’t in a position where she was in a toxic situation and as painful as that was for herself I love that she did it for herself.

This book had me crying it hit me in the feels so much and so far this is my favourite out of the series. It was great to begin the year with this series.

The Second We Met – Maya Hughes

45022943. sy475

Dear Jerk Across the Street, sorry for accidentally walking in on you and catching an eyeful of your—equipment. And hard pass on the open invitation to join you in the shower “anytime”, A-hole.

That’s the note I should’ve written. Instead I sent a pleasant and apologetic version.

Had I known Phoenix “Nix” Russo would’ve been the neighbor from hell, I’d have told him right where he could shove my words.

Nix is the big man on campus with everyone lined up at his games to make sure he knows it. Sure, he’s got piercing blue eyes, abs that don’t quit and a smile that could set fire to a set of panties from a hundred yards away, but he’s also the biggest pain in my ass.

Dear Pink-Haired Menace, learn how to take a joke and stop being such a kill-joy…

Elle Masterson called the cops on one of my parties—again. My sweet talking usually gets me out of trouble, but this time it got me into a nice pair of silver handcuffs. Now I’m on a reputation rehab tour with a stop at a spring break community service project.

Guess who’s my new boss?

Now we’re shoulder to shoulder, sweaty, tired and…she’s not anything like I expected. There might just be a heart under that hardass exterior. She’s invading my dreams and I can’t shake the feeling she’s the key to unlocking a piece of me that I’ve hidden away.

It’s only a matter of time until she finds out why I’m really here.

Maybe I can break through her walls and into her heart before that happens…one screw at a time.

**The Second We Met is a standalone new adult romance**

This book is the second book in the Fulton U series which can be read as a standalone but for me the only way to read these books is to read them in order, I read The Perfect First and it got me all excited for the next one and actually the whole series.

I really liked Elle from the moment we met her she took no shit from anyone although that also got her in trouble. When she wasn’t trying to help people and win the Huffington award she liked to call the police on her neighbour Nix when he holds parties.

Nix, boy does he know how to get under Elle’s skin but he also likes to annoy her slightly, after Elle gets him arrested Nix is forced to do reputation rehab by his dad. That gets him straight in the patch of Elle and she is now his boss.

Both of these two were at each other’s throat for a lot of this book and the moment when they finally build a bridge whilst building homes and I love that we had the change between them. I loved the tension between them especially the sexual tension and the moment it built and their first kiss it was legit chills.

I really liked Jules and oh my god when it was revealed that she was The Letter Girl leaving dirty letters to Berk honestly it made me so excited for their book which there will be a review coming for their book because honestly that book hit something different. Anyway back to this book.

I loved the theme through this book of not allowing Marissa to cook and their reaction to it every time makes me laugh. I also can’t wait for LJ and Marissa’s book.

I love Jules and Elle’s friendship it was just so sweet how they were there for each other especially when it came to heartbreak.

Nerf war that was a surprising thing in this book and I love it, I love that they had a nerf war where they had their first kiss and it was perfect. Honestly amazing. I just didn’t see that it would be their first kiss and it was so cute.

The Perfect First – Maya Hughes

43802284. sy475

“How long do you last in bed?” Those were her first words to me, swiftly followed up with, “And how big would you say you are?”

Persephone Alexander. Math genius. Lover of blazers. The only girl I know who can make Heidi braids look sexy as hell. And she’s on a mission. Lose her virginity by the end of the semester.

I walked in on her interview session for potential candidates (who even does that?) and saw straight through her brave front. She’s got a list of Firsts to accomplish like she’s only got months to live. I’ve decided to be her guide for all her firsts except one. Someone’s got to keep her out of trouble. I have one rule, no sex. We even shook on it.

I’ll help her find the right guy for the job. Someone like her doesn’t need someone like me and my massive…baggage for her first time.

Drinking at a bar. Check.

Partying all night. Double check.

Skinny dipping. Triple check.

She’s unlike anyone I’ve ever met. The walls I’d put up around my heart are slowly crumbling with each touch that sets fire to my soul.

I’m the first to bend the rules. One electrifying kiss changes everything and suddenly I don’t want to be her first, I want to be her only. But her plan was written before I came onto the scene and now I’m determined to get her to re-write her future with me.

So this is not the first book I’ve read by Maya Hughes I read some of the Kings of Rittenhouse series which includes: Shameless King, Reckless King, and Ruthless King. I really need to finish that series which I do plan on doing this year. Anyway onto this book, I was really excited when Maya announced a new series because I love her work. I had high expectations.

Seph I felt really sorry for her when we learnt how she had been brought up and that she hadn’t made friends or didn’t really know how to interact with them my heart really broke for her. Although Seph was sassy, funny but she was also incredibly protective of herself and didn’t like to trust or rely on anyone else.

Reece is so cute and I loved him so much I also loved that he was willing to help Seph with her list and although he should have known better he was willing to do everything to help her.

I loved the idea of the list and Seph trying to do everything before she had to go and do what her dad wanted her to do. Seph just wanted to live her life before he dad controlled the rest of it and I loved Reece for helping her with it.

I really liked Reece and Seph’s relationship it was cute how fast he became obsessed with her and wanting to help her. The way their relationship built it was so cute the way they were there for each other. I love how fast they begin to fall for each other and finally give into what they were feeling.

I loved the side characters in this book, Nix, LJ, Berk they were just so lovely and it did make me excited for there stories I just love how supportive they all are for each other. Just supportive friend group. We also meet Alexa in this book which she begins to play a bigger part later in the series which I found very interesting.

I loved Reece’s family they were cute.

Also I feel like an honourable mention from this whole book was Reece’s gift which says ‘you are enough’ and honestly it was so cute and I loved that he did that for her and let her know that she is enough it filled me heart so much it was perfect.

I loved this book it had so many cute moments that Maya is definitely known for and it was a great start to the new series. Although the series is also ending (7/1/21) with the final book so I’m behind on posting reviews.

Ruthless King – Maya Hughes

43305393
A STANDALONE second chance, enemies to lovers romance.

My dick never got me in half as much trouble as my heart…

We were high school sweethearts. I was head over heels for her and no one could tell me we weren’t going to last forever. College? Going pro? My family’s money? None of it mattered. She was all I needed.

Then she ripped my heart out. But I’m not going to let that happen again.

She’s back. Invading my life and acting like she was the wronged one. The pain is still there, but I can’t keep my eyes off her. I can’t stop thinking about her and how much was left unsaid between us. Being this close is making me question everything I thought I knew about her.

This time everything will be on my terms. Everything…

I’d like to thank Give Me Books Promotions as well as Maya Hughes for sending me an e-arc of this book it is very much appreciated. So this is the third book in the Kings of Rittenhouse series, I’ve read Shameless King and Reckless King. So through those two books I was anticipating Avery and Emmett’s story so much and it was my most anticipated read of this year! So when I finally started it! I was in love.

I feel so bad for Emmett like the pain he feels when it comes to Avery and how much what happened between them hurt him. I loved Emmett but whenever it came to Avery he became a really short fuse and he couldn’t control his anger or jealousy. Other than that really short fuse which obviously you can understand. I really liked him, he was caring and wanted the best for his friends.

I get the feeling Avery pushed Emmett away so she could take care of her sister and be the provider for her. If so that’s really sweet. I also get the feeling Emmett’s dad tried to pay her to stay away. I was totally right about these things. I felt so bad for Avery she had so much on her plate, wanting to protect her sister and her father. I loved the relationship between Avery and her sister it was so sweet. Avery was trying so hard to keep everything together for everyone without really taking care of herself sometimes.

Avery and Emmett had such a good connection like you could see their chemistry and how they felt about each other. Although the showdown between Avery and Emmett there was so much hurt and crap between them, and I could basically feel the pain that they were feeling and gosh it made me so emotional. I actually cried through this it was so painful for them and gosh it just hit me in the feels.

So we’ll just go with Emmett’s parents are absolutely disgusting people, that’s as much as I want to say about them without going into too much detail. But they were so horrible and their behaviour was not acceptable.

I love their friends! Colm, Kara, Mak, Declan, Ford, Heath, Olivia. I am glad they are forcing them together. They are such great friends and you can just tell them that they want the best for their friends, but I think we all need friends like that in life.

Such a beautiful story I fell crazy in love with this. So many emotions and great storytelling! I loved everything about it. Also made me cry. It was such great writing and the plot was good, and I loved how we got some flashbacks from when Avery and Emmett were together also the downfall of their relationship. I really enjoyed that part.

I really can’t wait for Ford and Olivia’s story after how Ruthless King ended I really need the next book! It’s going to be so good!

Reckless King – Maya Hughes

40776410

An irresistibly steamy college sports romance.

Heath Taylor. Laid back. Easy going. Fastest guy on two skates and chill to a fault, at least that’s what they say. Until Kara.

Three nights together and I’m done for. Her laugh, her smile, the way my hand curves around her waist. She’s the one. Not a doubt in my mind…until I walk into my last class of the semester.

Kara, the woman of my dreams, is my new instructor. My hockey season and her career prospects are on the line. One false move–if anyone finds out–we’re both sunk.

On the ice I’m a beast that can’t be stopped, but thoughts of her are throwing me off my game. My fingers itch to feel her in my arms again. But risking everything could ruin what we’ve worked so hard for.

Life has a way of changing the best laid plans. And sometimes you can’t stay away no matter the promises you make…

I’d like to thank Give me books promotions and Maya Hughes for sending me an e-arc for this book, it is very much appreciated! So I have already read and reviewed the first book Shameless King and I enjoyed that one.

Heath oh I loved his character in Shameless King he made me laugh so much and with how he teased his friends when he ended up with Kara it was so funny. All the jokes he had made his friends could do some payback. He was a really good character and I loved how he was willing to protect her and he kept trying to especially when it turned out she was his TA I just I loved it, they were adorable together.

I loved Kara’s character! I also loved how she changed what she wanted to do, going from whatever her major was (I’ve forgotten) to writing. I loved it. Kara was such a caring and heartfelt character. I also found interesting the dynamic of Kara being adopted and sometimes the guilt she felt when it came to her biological mother. I loved seeing that dynamic played out for Kara and how she felt about her mother. It was very interesting and something I don’t see often in NA.

There was so much chemistry between Kara and Heath you could practically feel how they felt about each other and how they were together as a couple and not just the sex. The sex was very well written though. I enjoyed their relationship and how even Heath knew in his time of need he went straight to Kara and I loved that.

Also. Preston deserved better. I’m very bitter about this.

I loved the Karma at the end of this book of Jason who has just like hated Kara from the beginning because at first, they wanted the same position. Finally got some bloody Karma handed down to him! He got caught having an affair with the teacher, and I just love it!

Anyway, I really enjoyed this book and its characters and the most important thing to come out of this is EMMETT AND AVERY’S BOOK IS NEXT! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR IT. I NEED IT. I NEED IT MORE THAN EVER.

Shameless King – Maya Hughes

39669992

A deliciously steamy enemies with benefits romance.

Declan McAvoy. Voted Biggest Flirt. Highest goal scorer in Kings of Rittenhouse Prep history.
Everyone’s impressed, well except one person…

After a blow out in high school, Makenna Halstead and I were happy to never have to cross paths again. Except life has a way of knocking you straight in the teeth with a puck when you least expect it. She hasn’t just returned to my life, she crashed into it like a wrecking ball…into my college kingdom, into my class, and smack dab into the seat next to mine. My new lab partner to be exact.

For years we hated each other… I may be King on the ice, but she is the Ice Queen. She has no problem calling me out, doesn’t back down, and her piercing blue eyes have me picturing more than than just my arms wrapped around her.

Now we’re stuck with each other and there’s no getting around that fact that we have to work together. My hockey career hangs in the balance. Problem? Oh, yeah.

I can’t deny it. I want her. More than I ever thought I could want a woman. I’ve got one semester–only four months–to convince her everything she thought about me was wrong.

Will my queen let me prove to her I’m the King she can’t live without?

Only one way to find out…

I’d like to thank Maya Hughes for sending me an e-arc of this book it is very much appreciated. This review was meant to be up ages ago but I’m only just getting around to it! So sorry about that! But into the review!

I loved Makenna and the more I read of the story the more I fell in love with her character. The way she dealt with things and when you discover something you begin to understand why she acts and feels so cold and tries to do the best. I don’t want to tell you because it’s better if you read it! Either way, I understood the reason Makenna was so focused. I also enjoyed when Declan began to get her to begin to have fun I loved that side of Makenna too.

Declan he was an interesting character especially as we just saw Makenna thinking he was dumb when it came to working yet he was just as focused as her especially because he needed to pass. I loved his character and even more when he began to open up to Makenna. It did make me laugh because the first time they had sex because Makenna left him in bed alone, it was so funny to actually see his insecurity. It was a different side to him and I liked seeing it.

Despite coming to love Declan and Makenna it really did take me a while to actually like them, I think when they both started opening up to each other, that was the moment I began to actually like the characters. But once I did I loved them so much!

I loved Heath, Preston, Colm, Ford and Emmett, I loved their friendship that they all had. I love the bond that they all had for each other. ALSO! My one question throughout this whole book is what happened between Avery and Emmett! I really need to know what happened! When I read the prequel and there bust up I really wanted to know why! I hope we get a book explaining!

Also, I really liked Declan standing up to his dad, it was a long time coming! When he did it I was like yes. It’s about time!

I really enjoyed the plot and the storyline! It kept me hooked all the way through and I honestly can’t wait to read Heath’s book! The writing was great and it kept me immersed in the story! It was honestly such a great book!

Excerpt

A giddy laugh bubbled up from deep down. I snuck a glance at myself in the mirror again. I was a lumpy diva, but, fuck it, I was a badass, too. And I was slowly skidding closer to the ground as the sweat that gathered behind my knee loosened my grip.
Every move I nailed got me a little closer to appreciating how far I’d come. From the first days of slipping off trying to do a basic spin with my feet planted firmly on the floor, to being a diva. This was my freaking body and I loved the shit out of it.
And if I kept telling myself that, maybe one day I’d believe it.
I lowered myself onto my bedroom floor with a flourish, throwing in one more spin for my imaginary audience.
The song ended and I braced my hands on my hips, panting and sweating like I’d run a 5k, with a grin so damn wide I felt it in my toes. Jumping up and down, I gave myself a high five and a few club-worthy woos. It made it harder to figure out if I was doing the tricks one hundred percent correctly, but I sure as hell wasn’t going to record myself to watch later or head to a pole dancing studio with full-wall mirrors. I wasn’t at that level of okay with me in all my glory—yet.
I flopped onto my bed and stared up at the ceiling. My hip-hugging short shorts and sports bra gave me little coverage, but pole dancing wasn’t exactly about modesty. I’d given it a try at the urging of my therapist during freshman year and hell if it hadn’t helped—some. It was a way for me to build strength, body confidence, and maybe attempt to feel a little sexy.
The door slammed downstairs and I shot up from the bed.
“Jules!” Berk’s unmistakable call sent me from pole dancing heart racing to ‘floor it, Louise,’ careening toward a cliff. I shot up and fell off my bed, rattling the perfume bottles on my dresser. Scrambling off the floor, I grabbed my sweatpants and tugged them on, hopping from foot to foot and sounding like I’d taken up bowling in my bedroom. I snagged my glasses off my desk and shoved them onto my face.
Berk was probably wondering how I’d trapped a wild animal up in my room. I grabbed my long sleeved T-shirt and hoodie off the back of my chair even though it was August. The fabric clung to my sweaty skin and I probably had a sweat-stashe going on, but that was better than him walking up here and finding me half naked. A panic spiral shot through me and I got dressed even quicker and threw open my door.
My feet barely touched any of the steps as I flew downstairs.
“Berk.” I fell into the kitchen, bracing my arm against the doorway. The butterflies in my stomach were replaced by a whole freaking safari. I tightened my lips to what I hoped was a non-serial killer level of smile. My heart was glowing like a spotlight, so I wrapped my arms tighter around myself. Tingles tiptoed up and down my spine at the sight of his floppy hair and jeans that hugged his ass and trim waist better than mine ever fit me.
His head shot up and the half of the cookie sticking out of his mouth broke off and dropped onto the counter. “There you are.” His words were muffled behind two manhole cover-sized cookies.
“Did you think I was hiding in my cookie box?”
“Is that what you’re calling it these days?” Killer smile and a direct hit. “The old cookie box.”

Excerpt

How can you lose someone you’ve never met? The Letter Girl had careened into my life like a damn smash and grab pro and wormed her way into my heart before I knew what happened.
She was everything I’d ever wanted in a girl. Hot as hell. Smart and caring. The slow slide of the notes from X-rated to something more caught me off guard, but she became someone I could talk to. Someone I could share parts of myself that I didn’t share with other people. Even if she didn’t know everything about my past, she knew more than most.
No one wanted to be sexy pen pals with a former foster kid with almost no one in the whole world. Nah, that was for the college senior, soon to be pro athlete.
Don’t ever let anyone see things bother you; I learned that in foster home number four. If everything’s a joke, there’s nothing they can do to hurt you, but losing TLG when I thought I’d finally found someone who knew me for me and actually gave a shit? That hurt. It was an unexpected squeeze on my heart every so often that made it hard to breathe.
Jules slid her hand closer, herky-jerky like she was in a stop motion animation movie before it finally landed on top of mine with a gentle pat. “Is it really that important for you to find her?”
I shrugged. “Maybe not. She probably got tired of trying to figure out my fucking chicken scratch.” I forced out a laugh through the tightness in my chest.
“Once the season starts things will be crazy for you, right?”
“You’re right. I guess I’m fixating because not much else is going on.” No, this would always be a question I needed answered. Who is TLG and did all the things we’d written about mean as much to her as they meant to me?
